Tinseling Thursday XVIII

Today it's up to Daniel Wilson to give us our dose of thursday tinsels
His latest EP "The boy who cried thunder" and especially the song "If You Went Away" feels like a warm bath to me and I was struck by his beautiful and "flexible like fresh chewing gum" voice. Even when he sings about cold heartbreaking things it still got a warm feeling. Here's "If you went away"

Daniel Wilson is from Ypsilanti, Michigan, and grew up on a diet of gospel, Christian music, musicals and ‘90s MTV :) But how about his live skills? How does he sound unmastered, unproduced? Well, here's some live footage of "The Boy Who Cried Thunder" The proof is in the pudding, here's a soundcloud link to the full EP, enjoy!

Tinseling Thursday XVII

Here are the tinsels from Norwegian band Einar Stray Orchestra
Einar Stray, founder of the band is known from his colaboration with Moddi. His band just released their second album "Politricks",  combining symphonic music, folk and some indie pop/rock, with a kind of Sufjan Stevens sauce. Listen to their latest release and title song "Politricks"

They blew my socks off with this live version of "Pockets full of holes" also from the album Politricks Here's some older work from the EP For The Country, this song is caled Caressed. Let's end with a soundcloud link with some older work, enjoy...

Tinseling Thursday XVI

I'm in love! Now and then I'm overwhelmed by new music. This time Canterbury band Syd Arthur blew my mind. And although it's not thursday yet over here, I couldn't wait to post this one.

Syd Arthur are Liam Magill (guitar, vocals), Raven Bush (violin, keys), Fred Rother (drums), Joel Magill (bass).
It's their song Hometown Blues that made me go WOW.

I'm not going to compare them with other bands, there are traces of jazz, folk, prog rock and funk. The band themselves call what they do "psychedelic funk rock" and that's not strange because of Canterburies past music scene (Soft Machine, Caravan and Camel). Raven Bush (great name by the way) is a nephew and heir of Kate Bush, a Kent girl herself. Their latest album "Sound Mirror" is a beauty with hits like Hometown Blues or this song "Garden of Time" Here's some previous work, their album On and On And here's the radio edit of my favourite song Hometown Blues, enjoy!

Tinseling Thursday XV

Let's bring up some veterans to tinsel up our thursday!
How about Eno • Hyde
Famous producers/musicians Brian (Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle)Eno and Karl Hyde (Underworld) will release a new collaborative album on may the 6th (5th in the UK)called "Someday World". Yesterday I heard the song Daddy's Car and I became very happy! Nice uptempo song, nice drums, nice baseline, nice vocals by Karl.... well let's hit it! I love it, it was the second song they shared with us after "The Satellites" which was also impressive but (like someone commented on the video), with very "cheesy horns" and I must admit. It sounds like they found a second hand 80's Roland Juno in the studio's cellar. But okay that's what I like, more cheesiness in todays music! The song was composed and sung by both Eno and Hyde. It features Eno's Roxy Music bandmate Andy Mackay, Eno's daughter Darla Eno, Sinead O'Connor producer John Reynolds, the record's co-producer Fred Gibson, and Georgia Gibson.

I always admired Brian Eno for his minimalistic music and the projects he did as a producer. Karl Hyde's last album Edgeland is also more moving towards that minimal approach so I thought this collaboration would be also very loungy/chilling/esoteric but wrong I was :) Here's Karl Hyde's song from that Edgeland album "The Night Slips Us Smiling Underneath It's Dress"

Tinseling Thursday XIV

Ready to unwrap our todays Boxed-In tinsels?

Boxed In is the chosen alias for the first solo venture from London based producer Oli Bayston and Oliver is no newbie. Being 7 year in Manchester-based band Keith, working as engineer and assistant to producer Dan Carey (Franz Ferdinand, Hot Chip, Bat For Lashes, Toy) and playing keyboards on Willy Mason's and Steve Mason's most recent LPs, he's earned his spurs. But even those experiences won't count if the music is sheit :) Luckily, that's not the case, listen for example to his latest song "No Joke" The quirky bass is played by Mark Nicholls, another fellow band member is Liam Hutton (drums). Here's "All Your Love is Gone" I love this acoustic piano version he played on Sofar London and we end with a soundcloud link to "Legacy", enjoy your todays tinsels!

Tinseling Thursday XIII

Hello again, a bit late for a Tinseling Thursday because it's friday right now but who cares...it's the music that counts. Todays tinsels are brought by Dan Croll
Daniel Francis Croll is a British singer-songwriter born in Newcastle-under-Lyme. He moved to Liverpool when he was 18 to attend the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA). While at LIPA, he won the national Songwriter of the Year award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund and was one of eight students picked to have a one-to-one with LIPA founder Sir Paul McCartney. He is currently signed to Turn First Records. I heard his song "From Nowhere" on the radio and I was sold. The cheap organsound, the dropping guitarnote and his voice. Let's take a listen to this song (already released in september 2012 by the way) Looking a bit like 1930's actor Harold Lloyd or a well-behaved honourable student, his music is up-to-date, and original. I hear some catchy rhythms, nice dreamy choirs and light-hearted keys and his music's got an african twist sometimes. A remix of the song From Nowhere (Baardsen remix)is featured om the soundtrack of GTA V. Here's the song "Compliment Your Soul" that was featured on FIFA 1... Dan is a definitely a gameboy Here a soundcloud link to his latest song "Home" en we end this post with "In/Out". His album "Sweet Disarray" is released march 10th by Deram records, enjoy! Tinseling Thursday XII

Today we have the nice voices of Lucius giving us the Thursday tinsels.
Lucius is a indie pop band from Brooklyn, New York consisting of Jess Wolfe, Holly Laessig, Dan Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri. The tandem singing of frontwomen Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig is a bit confusing because sometimes is sounds like one voice. “Sometimes we’ll be recording something and we’ll listen back, and we can’t remember who sings what,” Said Jess (or Holly) on the phone in a interview. They sound a bit like First Aid Kit or Secret Sisters but the music sounds more poppy. Let's take a look and have a listen to their latest release from the upcoming album "Wildewoman". Here's "Tempest". Here's an older song called "Don't Just Sit There" This song triggered NPR Tiny Desk Session creator Bob Boilen to ask them for a session, here's the result: Set List "Go Home" "Don't Just Sit There" "Turn It Around" "Genevieve" Very impressive live skills, I love the twofoldness. We end with another song from the upcoming album Wildewoman (Mom+Pop music), this song is called "Hey Doreen" the album is coming out on october 15.

Tinseling Thursday XI

Sorry, but for the time being I'm going to post some shorter items because I'm very busy with some interesting musical projects. Todays tinsels were produced by Hot Chip and 2 Bears member Joe Goddard
He made a remix of a Dirty Projectors song named The Socialites and it's a beauty, even better than the original but that's my humble opinion.

Nice one isn't it? Via soundcloud you can enjoy a bunch of remixes....thanks Joe!

Tinseling Thursday X

Today a very short tinsel due to a lack of time, as you may have noticed. Nowadays it's Bastille buzzing on all radiostations with their hit "Pompeii".

Bastille are an alternative rock band from London. First formed in 2010, Bastille began as a solo project by singer-songwriter Dan Smith, who later decided to form a band. The four-piece consists of members Dan Smith, Chris 'Woody' Wood, Will Farquarson and Kyle Simmons. The name of the band derives from Bastille Day – an event celebrated on 14 July, which is also the same date lead vocalist, Dan Smith, was born. Yesterday I saw them performing an a capella version of this song which I want to share with you. And here's their latest single from the album "Bad Blood" this is the song "Laura Palmer" and here's the original song "Pompeii" on soundcloud you can enjoy the album "Others people heartache part II" with some nice covers, what about "Killer" from Seal? enjoy

Tinseling Thursday IX

Today it's up to Theo Bass to give us the thursday tinsels!

Theo Bass is an Oxford based music maker working on his first EP, as he describes himself on his facebook page. I found almost no pics of him so we have to do it with this blurry live pic he posted on his soundcloudpage. But it's the music that counts and he has made some beautiful tracks, for example Mr. Stellakis!
I like the chirpy sounds he uses to make his rhythm tracks. His profound rhythms are tantalizing anyway, listen for example to the song "Slovenian Police" it's a beauty. He's playing at the Brainchild Festival in Canterbury (UK) 5-7 july. On his soundcloud he is posting lots of nice dreamy soundscape stuff, songs like King Karl, Lit and JAB, enjoy!

Tinseling Thursday VIII

Today we got Telekinesis for our weekly dose of tinsels.
Telekinesis is Michael Benjamin Lerner, an indie rocker based out of Seattle who is currently signed to Merge Records. The band was signed to Merge Records in early 2009, and shortly afterward released the eponymously named debut album Telekinesis! The album was produced, mixed, and engineered with the help of Chris Walla (guitarist for Death Cab For Cutie), who also played on most tracks. They recorded one song per day on analog tape. Last month they released their third album called "Dormarion" and it's instant summer! First I want you to see the video of this albums first single "Ghostst and Creatures"
Lerner originally intended to record the album completely on his own. Instead, he made the record in two weeks with Spoon drummer Jim Eno in his Austin, TX studio, Public Hi-Fi. On Dormarion Lane, to be specific. “It’s a beautiful-sounding word, and if you Google it, nothing but this one tiny street comes up,” says Lerner. “No origin, no description. I can’t tell you what the word means. It’s like something from Lost.” Here's the more uptempo song and second track from the album "Empathic People" I like his voice, sometimes gritty, sometimes crystal clear. He's made some beautiful ballads too. Listen for example to the song Symphony Symphony by Telekinesis on Grooveshark And we end with Island#4, a song with some Death Cab influences, enjoy. Island #4 by Telekinesis on Grooveshark

Tinseling Thursday VII

Today's Tinsels brought to you by Eliza and the Bear

Eliza and the Bear are an indie folk pop band from London and existing of James Kellegher, Callie Noakes, Martin Dukelow, Chris Brand and Paul Kevin Jackson. Wait a minute there's no Eliza? That's right Eliza and the Bear is the title of a collection of poems by Eleanor Rees. First let's take a look and have a listen to their latest feelgood song "Upon the North" James the lead singer suffers from arthritis in his hands and finds playing music is the only thing that relieves the pain. Another prove that music is a healing factor for a lot of problems I know a stammering guy but when singing he doesn't stutter at all.

Here's the song "The Southern Wild" performed at the Amazing Afternoon sessions. And here's the live version of "Brothers Boat" Nice to see a bunch of friends enjoying the music they make, and luckily we have a soundcloud link... enjoy!

Tinseling Thursday VI

Just a quick tinsel today, here are the "Compact Disk Dummies"

Yes again from Belgium I know it seems I only post Belgian bands last weeks, true because I'm working a lot in Belgium and the radio there is very good, they offer great indie music on the mainstream channels and this week there's "Week van eigen Kweek" on Studio Brussels (loosely translated "The own breed week :) and they only play Belgian music, I love this because you hear a lot of undiscovered and unknown music. Like the brothers Coorevits (Janus and Lennert).
They make a kind of electropunk.
Here's their latest song "The Reeling"
They won Belgian most prestigious rock contest called Humo's Rock Rally in 2012 so live they kick some ass! Here's their version of Britney Spears song Toxic Here's some older work this is the song Fat Frazurzz and here the cover Heart of Glass from Blondie

Tinseling Thursday V

Sorry for my lame blog behaviour last week. I was very busy with my own music and gigs so almost no time to post some nice music here on møpkemuziek. Finally I've found some spare time to present SX to you.
I've already refered to this Belgian band when I made a post about Polica. SX is a bit in the same league, dreamy female voice interwoven with 80's synths (the famous Yamaha DX7), dark big beats and strong hooks. They surprised me back in 2011 with their first single "Black Video" ...completely out of the blue.
Let's take a look and have a listen to this song
Nice song isn't it? SX are Benjamin Desmet, Stefanie Callebaut and Jeroen Termote. They took their time to make a beautiful debut album called "Arche" which was released november 2012. Here is the song Graffiti, with a very strong chorus, I like Stefanies sharp and edgy voice! The video by the way was released last week...fresh fresh :) The first single release from the album Arche was Gold. Here's the live version And here's a soundcloud link to five songs of the Arche album, enjoy.

Tinseling Thursday IV

Today it's up to Belgian band "Absynthe Minded" to lighten up our Thursday

Absynthe Minded is a Belgian rock band, around frontman, vocalist and guitarist Bert Ostyn. Their tracks contain a weird mix of rock, thirties jazz, a touch of funky soul, Balkan beats and Merseyside pop. Absynthe Minded originally was a one-man band, being musician-singer-composer Bert Ostyn. He started off in 1999 with recording More Than This on 8-track in a 5 to 4 bedroom in Ghent (yes again Ghent, I'm sorry ;-), soon he found other musicians (Renaud Ghilbert, Sergej van Bouwel, Jan Duthoy and Jakob Nachtergaele) to enjoy his project. And after the succesful debut album "Acquired Taste" they developed themselves into a very productive and exploring band producing 4 more great albums. Here's the song "Envoi" inspired by poems from the famous Belgian writer Hugo Claus, this is from the samenamed album Absynthe Minded. More recent is the song Space from the latest album "As it ever was" They make very diverse music, sometimes Bert sounds like Kings of Leon singer Caleb Followill, sometimes they sounds like a 30's jazz orchestra and they wrote a beautiful soundtrack for the movie "Turquoze", the movie is a beautie too by the way, here's the eastern orientated song "Little Rascal" And this is their latest single "End Of The Line" Here's the soundcloud link to a set of nice songs, enjoy

Tinseling Thursday III

Todays tinsels brought to you by "Toro Y Moi"

Toro Y Moi is Chazwick Bradley Bundick, an American recording artist and producer. His music is often identified with the rise of the CHILLWAVE movement in 2010 and 2011 (Chillwave, sometimes also referred to as glo-fi, is a genre of music whose artists are often characterized by their heavy use of effects processing, synthesizers, looping, sampling, and heavily filtered vocals with simple melodic lines.") .  Let's take a look and have a listen to his latest song "So Many Details" the first single of his new album "Anything in Return" released 22 january '13
I like that smooth summer feeling and the use of sytnhs / samples / rhythm patterns in combination with his light voice. Someone has been so friendly to put on the complete album on youtube so here's the link: He's a very productive guy because after releasing his full lenght album in january he's now released some tracks under a new side project called "Les Sins" here's "Grind" and "Prelim", enjoy!

Tinseling Thursday II

The second Tinseling Thursday is for the Belgian band Balthazar
Balthazar is Maarten Devoldere, Jinte Deprez, Patricia Vanneste, Simon Casier and Christophe Claeys from the neighbourhood of Ghent....i don't know if there's something in the tapwater over there but there's a lot going on in Ghent! Balthazar just released their second album Rats, but first i take you back to their first album Applause (2010), and the opening song from that album "Fifteen Floors" ...sorry there's no official video from this song. Strange song isn't it? I like that trumpet plunger sample and the strange lazy vocals. The album Rats was released oktober last year and it is also a little masterpiece. Here's the song "The Oldest Of Sisters" On soundcloud you can listen to the full album Applause, enjoy.

Tinseling Thursday I

No Thunder but Tinsels today:) This is Vacationer Formed in 2011 as a side project for Philly-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Kenny Vasoli
Vacationer blends the escapist dream pop of Beach House with the quasi-mystical electro-pop of Animal Collective. Rhythmic, heady, and hypnotic yet peppered with heartfelt lyrics and genuine emotion, Vacationer released its debut EP in 2011, followed by the full-length Gone in 2012; both were put out by Downtown Records. I think it sounds a bit like Avalanches or Jens Lekman, lot of nice old crispy samples blended together into new music. Live it's also worth listening, here's a kind of unplugged version of "Be With You". Via soundcloud you can enjoy the album "Gone"
